Following the Final Battle at Hogwarts in the last days of the the Second Dark War Hogwarts School of Witchcraft ans Wizardry was summarily closed, making the Hogwarts Class of 2006, the last NEWT level class to complete their education at Hogwarts School. Although the school was closed prior to NEWT examinations more than half the members of the Class of 2006 completed their education by taking NEWT exams at alternative schools or The Ministry of Magic.

Since then, students wishing to get a Wizard Education have had to apply to other schools, where competition for places has become extremely difficult due to the closing of Hogwarts. Many students have opted for private tutelage as a result, while families with less means have found themselves with no choice but to home school their children. Muggle families have struggled even more to find places for their children, owing to schools tenancy to favor legacy students and those with the money to bribe the correct people when reviewing applications for their scant number of places.

Faculty and Staff

The record of Hogwarts Faculty and Staff has been included for your convenience in school rosters for each year of operation.

Headmaster

The Headmaster or Headmistress of Hogwarts is the chief of it's staff, selected by the Ministry of Magic to fill the role, and given responsibility for managing the overall affairs of the school. The Headmaster never acts as a House Head, as they are supposed to be impartial to the four houses, and is not required, but may elect to teach classes.

Deputy Headmaster

The Deputy Headmaster or Headmistress is selected from among the Professors at the sole discretion of the Headmaster. Unlike the headmaster the Deputy Headmaster is not precluded from being selected as a house head, and is expected to teach classes.

House Heads

House heads are selected by the Headmaster and Deputy Headmaster from amongst the Professors. While there is no restriction on the apointment of a Professor who attended a school other than Hogwarts, alumni of a Hogwarts house are precluded from being selected as a head for any house other than their own.

Professors

Professors are hired and fired by the recommendation of the Headmaster with approval from the Ministry of Magic. Very seldom do the Ministry interfere with the selection of Professors, however, so the power for all intents and purposes rests with the Headmaster unless the Ministry has strong reason to object to, or insist upon the appointment of a given candidate.

Professors are afforded private chambers, a private office, and at least one classroom and are generally allowed to select them from any of Hogwarts vast quantity of chambers, offices and classrooms, provided said locales are not already occupied by another Professor.

The Flying Instructor, it should be noted, is not a Professor, but is considered staff and is generally the same individual as the School Quidditch Referee

School Librarian

The School Librarian is proposed by the Ministry of Magic, and approved by the Headmaster, she has sole discretion on the purchase, of all non-textbooks in the library, though she is required to carry four copies of each required book for each class.

The Librarian is afforded a private office, attached to the Library, and her choice of available quarters in the school.

School Nurse

The School Nurse is appointed by the Headmaster and approved by the Ministry of Magic, much like the Professors. They are required to have a background in healing, and preferred to have healer certifications, however dispensations have been made for those with expired qualifications.

The School Nurse's quarters and office are adjacent to the Infermery. She is required to sleep only in her own quarters whenever there are students on the grounds, lest she be needed to attend an injury.

Groundskeeper

The Hogwarts Grounds Keeper, is selected at the sole discretion of the Headmaster. Also known by the title Keeper if the Keys, the groundskeeper is responsible for keeping the main grounds of the school safe an hospitable, by keeping pathways clear of debris, filling sinkholes, and keeping dangerous magical creatures away from the school.

The Groundskeeper lodges in a hut on the school property.

Caretaker

The Caretaker of Hogwarts is selected at the sole discretion of the Headmaster. His responsibilities include maintenance of the school's facilities. While not soley responsible for student rules compliance, they have a history of being sticklers for said rules as they are responsible for cleaning up after messy rules breaches.

The Caretaker's office is on the ground floor, however they have discretion to choose their own quarters from those available.

Students

The record of the Hogwarts student body has been included for your convenience in school rosters for each year of operation.

Students are selected to attend Hogwarts from the population of Great Britain. Some priority is given to Legacy students, however, students are weighed by their demonstration of aptitude for magic, as demonstrated by involuntary use of magic before the age of 11, and as such Squibs and suspected Squibs are not generally admitted. While names are put down in the books for future classes as early as birth, no student is certain of their admission untill receiving their Hogwarts Acceptance Letter.

Houses

The Hogwarts Houses are Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin. At the beginning of each student's school career they were sorted into their house, by either the Sorting Hat (Founding - 1998) or the Sorting Gem (1999 till closure). A students house was the group they lived and studied with for the next 7 years. Only very rarely has a student ever been re-sorted.

Head Students

Each year, two seventh year students are selected from among their classmates by the Headmaster to serve as the Heads of the student body. While preference is to select one student of each gender a Head Girl and a Head Boy, there have been years with two of a kind. They are usually, but not always selected from among the Seventh Year Prefects. The Head Students are responsible for leading the school's Prefects, and for assisting the staff in the orderly function of the school, particularly in cases of emergencies. Head persons are the only students allowed to deduct points from Prefects, and can have points deducted for their own conduct only by Faculty. Their point deductions can be called for review by the Deputy Headmaster.

Prefects

There are generally six prefects from each house at any given time, two each from the Fifth, Sixth, and Seventh year classes. They are selected by their Head of house, and generally hold the position for their final three years at Hogwarts. Replacements are appointed however, should a Prefect leave the school, be stripped of their title, step down. They are not replaced, however, if elevated to Head Student status. Prefects of a lower year are generally expected to defer to those of an older year, particularly with regard to delegation of unpleasant Prefect tasks. Prefects are responsible for maintaining the orderly behavior of their housemates outside the classroom, reporting any repairs needed to their Common Rooms and Dorms, and have the power to deduct house points from other students, but not from one another, or from Head Students. Their point deductions can be called for review by their House Head.

Classes

Required OWL Level Courses

All students must take, Astronomy, Charms, Defence Against the Dark Arts, Herbology, History of Magic, Potions, and Transfiguration for their first five years at Hogwarts. After OWL Exams, all classes become elective.

Additionally, all first year students are required to take Flying instruction.

Elective Classes

Beginning in third year, a student may take two additional classes out of the following: Ancient Runes, Arithmancy, Care of Magical Creatures, Divination, and Muggle Studies. From 2003-2006, an additional elective Practical Applications of Magic, was also available.

A Note on Flying

Flying was always an available elective after the first year. A student could take that course to hone their flying skills, regardless of their reasons for it, meaning it was a class open to both Quidditch players and Non-Quidditch players, and in fact it was stressed that the class was for Flying and not a Quidditch class, though some lessons included Quidditch to teach flyers various skills, no experience was necessary and no history with that game was a requirement toward taking this class.

While OWLs and NEWTs were not given in this subject, a student choosing to the course up until leaving the school was granted a certificate that showed them capable of handling a broom and themselves on a broom at either a Regional or International level, if in regards to Quidditch Standards. Muggles would consider this a driver's license of sorts.

No books were needed and one did not have to have their own broom or gear, although having a broom was recommended as the school could not afford to keep up with the commercial market standard the brooms kept on the grounds were not suitable for anything beyond the most rudimentary of flying lessons.

Flying was the only elective class available to second year Hogwarts students.

School Traditions

School Song

Hogwarts, Hogwarts, Hoggy Warty Hogwarts,
Teach us something please,
Whether we’ll be old and bald
Or young with scabby knees.
Our heads could do with filling
With some interesting stuff,
For now they’re bare and full of air,
Dead flies and bits of fluff,
So teach us things worth knowing,
Bring back what we’ve forgot,
Just do your best, we’ll do the rest,
And learn until our brains all rot.

School Rules

The following is an outline of the rules in order and effect at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. These rules hope to curve and manage the actions of students whilst they are studying at the famed institution of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, no student is subject to unfair treatment under this set of rules and regulations. Each and every rule is applied to each student in an equal and inclusive manner.

No student of this institution is above, or is to believe they are above these most noble and worthwhile rules. Any student caught in the process, conspiracy and general disregard of the following list will be punished accordingly to the severity of their very, very, disappointing and disgusting ineptitude, for all this school hopes to instil in the unshaped and adolescent minds of its attendees. Such filthy criminals can only hope to bring great shame to their family name and entire house and should know that while Hogwarts is an enlightened place rule breakers are considered the scum of Wizarding society and it is many a citizens belief that such rotten apples should be locked up in a mental institution or take a trip to Azkaban to endure hard work and endless pain. This position is not abstained from Wizarding youth.

Decreed by, Argus Filch and M. Norris

Filch has also, in the past, declared students reading the school rules for more than twenty minutes as loitering and punished them accordingly.

CONCLUSION AND PUNISHMENT
The above rules are the structure of the institution of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and to break them is to attack the very foundations of this fine sanctuary. As a result of such dirty and shameful acts, punishments will be provided with the utmost pleasure...er, dignity. Depending on the severity of the students slanderous crime, slanderous of the schools reputation that is, punishments will be accordingly delivered. Such Punishments include but are not limited to:

  • A Swift kick
  • A sound flogging with a Whomping Willow bough
  • A 'moment' in the stocks
  • A visit with the cage
  • A visit to the dungeons, including a hanging by the toes.
  • Public Humiliation
  • Potion testing
  • A night in the Forbidden Forest
  • Expulsion. This is the desired means of punishment for all of the above.

As a result of certain disappointing, and highly protested 'advancements' in Wizarding society, the above, for the most part, have been ruled out as 'acceptable' means of student punishment. The following (forced) revisions have been made to the student punishments at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry: (Argus Filch and M. Norris)

  • Detention with school authority
  • Counselling
  • The stripping of student privilege, i.e. trips to Hogsmeade, attendance to school social events, admittance onto Quidditch teams, etc.
  • Student Probation
  • Night Trips to the Forbidden Forest with an authority
  • Hard work
  • Expulsion

School Uniforms

Students adhere to a strict dress-code, the violation of which may result in the loss of house points or detentions. Casual clothes, or mufti, can not be worn during school hours; this rule does not apply for after hours or school outings. As a final note, first year students would obviously have no clothing or gear pertaining to their particular house, and as such are exempt from those rules requiring house-specific decorations, such as the crest on the robes, or the striped colors on the school ties.

Required Female Dress Code

Shirts must be white button downs with collars; stays are only required when collars of said shirts are pointed. (Pan Collars or Scalloped Collars are also acceptable). Shirts must be neat, and may have a breast pocket if so desired, and all shirts are to be tucked into the skirts or pants at all times. (No loose shirttails, thank you.) Skirts must be knee to mid-calf length, pleated, and can either be black or charcoal grey (nothing lighter). Girls may wear pants if they write an essay stating their case to their house head, in which case they follow the same standards as boys.

Ties must be worn properly in class, and must be on your person at all times in the halls and between classes, but may be untied or in your pocket/schoolbag/etc. Either ties must be striped with the colours of your house, or be the primary colour of your house with your house’s symbol emblazoned upon it. Students in their first year will obviously not have any clothing that relates to their house; so they are exempt from wearing ties until their second year.

All shoes must be clean, and girls are not allowed to wear trainers during school hours, unless following the boy’s dress code, in which, again, one must petition for. Socks worn with the shoes are to be knee-high and either white, black, charcoal grey, or your primary house colour.

Required Male Dress Code

Shirts must be white button downs with collars, stays are only required when collars of said shirts are pointed. (Pan Collars or Scalloped Collars are also acceptable). Shirts must be neat, and may have a breast pocket if so desired, and all shirts are to be tucked into the skirts or pants at all times. (No loose shirttails, thank you.) All trousers are to be black or charcoal grey; no jeans allowed and nothing lighter than charcoal grey. If the trousers have belt loops then a belt (black only) must be worn. Trousers should be long enough to cover one’s socks when standing, though should not drag on the floors/ground. If they are too long, you will be asked to cuff them.

Ties must be worn properly in class, and must be on your person at all times in the halls and between classes, but may be untied or in your pocket/schoolbag/etc. Ties must either be stripped with the colours of your house, or be the primary colour of your house with your house’s symbol emblazoned upon it.

Male students are allowed to wear trainers, though white trainers are not allowed. They must be clean and laces should be tied properly at all times. Socks must he white, black, charcoal grey, or your primary house colour, as they will still be visible when you sit.

Optional Uniforms and Accessories

In the winter months, students may wear black traveling cloaks with silver fastenings that drape over ones shoulders (no sleeves). Students may also wear jumpers, in the winter, over their shirts; jumpers must be charcoal grey with their house’s colours in the trim.

If a student does not wish to wear current the outlined uniforms, the pre-1970 uniform, consisting of a simple black robe will suffice. This robe can be purchased from any Wizarding wear shop that caters to school uniforms. The one-piece article must be black and hooded with long sleeves. Sleeves should not impede ability to use one’s hands, and the hem of the robe should not double as a cleaning device for the school’s floors. A student’s house crest must be emblazoned upon the breast pocket of the robe. This style of dress is recommended for the student who wants a no-hassle, ready-to-go uniform that requires little care. Trainers are not permitted to be worn with this uniform, as they are permitted only with trousers, otherwise current regulations on socks and shoes are still in effect.

All students must have a black, brimless and pointed hat for formal events such as the Sorting and End-of-Term feasts. Other clothing items that can be purchased to reflect one’s house are earmuffs, gloves, scarves and pyjamas. See leading clothing retail stores for these items.

Clubs and Activities

Quidditch

Quidditch at Hogwarts is the foremost and highest visibility extracurricular activity at the school. The players are generally revered by their classmates (or ostracised if the team has embarrassed the house too badly on the field), and the Quidditch Captain holds many of the same privileges as the Prefects, such as use of the Prefects bathroom, and choice of seat at the house table in the Great Hall.
